I’m sure you’ve all heard me complain about it, many times before, but I was never able to beat Final Fantasy 8. I think it was due to a complete lack of understanding as to how Junctioning works, along with the fact that enemies become more powerful the more you level up, that accounted for my struggles with the game. Rarely do I fail to complete a game I have started, but after many hours of struggling against the final boss, barely able to leave a dent in their lofty HP, I had to accept that victory was miles beyond my reach.
Several years have since passed, and I have returned. And this time, I mean business. By business, I mean that I am taking advantage of every piece of advice anyone has ever given me, and consulting an online walkthrough, because darn it, I am not going to work my way through four discs just to fail again! I started my second playthrough of Final Fantasy XII in early December 2016. Nearly a year later, I have finally completed it (it took so long because I took a lot of breaks, particularly to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild). I am proud to say that I got far closer to 100% completion than last time, though there are still two things that remain incomplete, the Yiazmat hunt and the Bestiary, the former of which was brutal and just not worth my time. As far as the latter task goes…once I couldn’t defeat Yiazmat, I lost the motivation to bother with the Bestiary.
Nevertheless, I have plenty of accomplishments I can cite. I defeated every Esper, including Ultima and Zodiark. I defeated Marks 1-44. I even leveled up Vaan to level 99, Balthier to very nearly that high, and everyone else to about 90, making the final boss absurdly easy. One goal I had made when starting out was to complete this game using strategies more complex than my old “brute force method”, and I more or less did. At the very least, I used the Gambit system far more, and I used some basic strategies, one of which I will detail below. Continue reading Final Fantasy XII Has Finally Come to a Close
Over the past however many months, I have been posting the occasional updates on my progress through Final Fantasy XII and my quest to improve my general RPG-skills. Well, at this point, I have seriously been playing this game for probably a good year now. Maybe more. Probably more. I’ve lost track. All I know is that I’m around 186 hours at this point. 186! Frankly, it’s scary how much of one’s time RPG’s are able to eat up. Scary…yeah…
Well, seeing as I’ve made massive amounts of progress in this game since my last post on the subject, I thought I’d give you guys a quick update. While I am STILL not done, I am super close. It’s just that, at the moment, I’m locked in eternal combat with Yiazmat, so I don’t know when I’ll be getting around to the final stretch of the game. But I get ahead of myself. Like I said, I am super close to completing the story, though at this point, I have no idea what the game’s even about anymore. I see Bahamut on my world map. I’m supposed to go there…I think. You may recall this past year that I have been discussing with decent regularity my general incompetence when it comes to RPGs. For the longest time, I have been employing the “beat it senseless” method of defeating my foes. When that fails, I proceed to plan B, the “level up a whole bunch and try beating it senseless again” method, which, in all honesty, works far more often than it has any right to. Nevertheless, I was rather ashamed of myself and my apparent lack of skills in a genre I should have been more than familiar with by now.
Well, folks, I think that’s all beginning to change. Remember my previous post about my return to Final Fantasy 12? Last I left you all, I was tasked with travelling through Golmore Jungle in order to visit some dude with a fancy title who lives on a mountain. I do understand the story thus far better than that sentence suggests, but in order to be more specific, it would require looking online for various correct spellings, which I feel is unnecessary. For the past several years, I have intended to return to Final Fantasy XII for my second playthrough. But, as is often the case, what I intend to do and what actually happens are two very different things. I repeatedly had other games to play, keeping the twelfth numbered installment in the Final Fantasy series on the shelf. Plus, I have to admit that I always had a bit of a grudge against the game. I remembered being pretty apathetic towards the characters, I wasn’t very fond of a politics-related storyline, and… Now this last one is kind of silly, but…I thought the game was too big.
Too big, eh? I like large open worlds to explore far more than I like cramped or linear stages with little freedom to move around. I love searching through every nook and cranny and discovering new things, a task that is, naturally, far more rewarding in a large world than a small one. And yet, I recall several times in the past saying I didn’t like FF12 because it was too big. What’s the deal?
Gee, I sure hate that this game gives me more than my money’s worth. Continue reading A Triumphant Return to Final Fantasy XII
I have mentioned it from time to time, but over the last few years, I’ve been trying to catch up on a whole bunch of retro games I had missed. And at this point, I’m largely done. Sure, there are definitely more retro games out there that I should play one day, but as for the games I really wanted to check off my list, this goal has been met. Final Fantasy 4-9, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, EarthBound, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, all present and accounted for. The last one on my list to play was Final Fantasy V, which, like Final Fantasy IV, is probably pretty obscure for anyone who hasn’t been playing Final Fantasy since the beginning. (Thank you, Kingdom Hearts. You introduced even non-Final Fantasy fans to characters like Cloud and Squall, but not once do you mention FF6 and prior. With the exception of Setzer, of all people. Setzer.)
Final Fantasy 4 and 5 were the only games not explicitly on my list, but they came with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, respectively, and who am I to pass up on an essentially free pair of games? While FF4 was merely to pass the time and to say with confidence that, yes, I’ve played Final Fantasy 4, I must say that I enjoyed Final Fantasy 5 far more than I expected to. The newest of the 30-day video game topics is my current or most recent video game-themed wallpaper. As much as I would like to have actual video game wallpaper, I’m assuming they must mean my computer’s desktop. And due to my obvious level of obsession with all things gaming, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I do indeed have a video game desktop.
I actually went through many different images for my desktop in the semi-distant past. I…don’t remember most of them, but I do recall having a screenshot of the secret ending of Donkey Kong Country 2, where the Kongs are gazing at the sunset, along with a Jak 2 screensaver. That’s right, there was a Jak 2 screensaver, which I earned by completing this odd, little game on the game’s official web site. It had Jak sitting in jail, looking bored, while bugs crawled around and the sky outside would change depending on the time of day. Kind of…weird, to say the last. There are some gamers who openly admit that they have no desire to play older games because they prefer the more advanced, better looking games of today. There are others who say that gameplay is the only thing that matters, so if a game is good, no matter how old it is, they will play it. I am usually in the latter category, but over the past year, I have realized that I, too, have a limit for how far back into the past I can go and still enjoy gaming. I think every gamer has this limit. Mine is the SNES, with a few exceptions.
You see, I once believed that I could play any game, despite its age, and enjoy it as long as it was a good game. I had plenty of SNES games I loved, and one day, I thought I’d travel just a little farther back in time and download a few Virtual Console games for the NES. These games were the original Legend of Zelda and Metroid games. Being classic games that marked the beginning of two amazing franchises, surely I couldn’t go wrong. Right?

The title of this post may, at first, appear misleading. Vanille has fur in two parts of her costume, so which, pray tell, am I talking about? To which I respond, the back stuff, silly. The shoes have already been covered. I was pretty excited to work with fur, as I never had before, and it was quite a treat when I received a bag of fluffy, fake brown fur in the mail one day. It was less of a treat, however, when I cut it.
The problem with long fur is the mess. Once I cut the fur to the correct size, a lot of fur came loose. The fur was attached quite securely to the backing, but cutting the fabric means lots of fur will be liberated from their bond, free to fly about the floor at any hint of a breeze. To avoid dealing with stray pieces of fur every time I moved my fabric, I just put it on the kitchen floor and started pulling fur off the edges. Eventually, I had a big, ol’ pile of the stuff. Shaking the fabric quite vigorously, more fur came flying off, and I collected that, too. After a little while, no more fur came free. I delivered this fur to the nearest trash receptacle and got ready for phase…whichever came next. Continue reading Vanille Cosplay: The Fur
